Hi! My name is Jeni Gaston  and I am the 8th grade English Language Arts teacher. I graduated from Alma College in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts, a major in Elementary Education, and minors in English and Psycholgoy.  I also have my Early Childhood endorsement and am certified to teach K-8 and 6-8 English.  In addition to teaching, I enjoy Yoga, being outside, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

This year, 8th grade English Language Arts is divided into several units and themes:

1. Theme: Life Lessons. Unit: Short Stories

2. Theme: Courage in Life and Literature. Unit: Drama.  We will be reading Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl

3.  Theme: Together We Stand.  Unit: Informational Text - Argumentative Essays and Speeches

4. Theme: Turning Points.  Unit: Historical Fiction and Informational Text (research).  We will be reading The Glory Field by Walter Dean Meyer

5. Theme: Individual vs. Society. Narrative Unit. We will be reading Gathering Blue by Lois Lowery

We will continue to implemement Disciplinary Literacy as our instructional framerwork while teaching students the Common Core Standards.  The purpose of this course is to provide students integrated language arts study in reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language in preparation for college and career readiness.  Through guided instructional activities involving reading and writing, eigth grade students will explore short stories, poetry, historical fiction, narrative, and informational text, including speeches.  They will apply the writing process to complete narratives, arguments, informational/explanatory essays, and both short stories and sustained research papers/projects.  Unit plans provide teachers with differentiated instruction options, an integrated vocabulary/grammar curriculum, and Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) strategies for English Language Learners (ELL).
